Established in Fife in 1919, Fisher & Donaldson are a family with baking at its heart. Our love of baking has been handed down through five generations, driven by an uncompromising commitment to the pursuit of quality and sourcing the finest ingredients. From traditional Scottish favourites to seasonal treats, morning rolls and afternoon sweets, for over a century we have baked for the pure and simple joy that comes from tasting something truly delicious.
Quality – We’re committed to doing everything to the best possible standards. If we’re going to do it, we do it well.
Family – It’s at the heart of everything we do. It truly is a family affair.
Heritage – We honour our 100+ years of expertise, knowledge and passion in everything we do.
Community – We have a genuine love for people and place, we’re part of the fabric of our communities.
Brothers-in-law Willie Fisher and Davie Donaldson return from WW1 and use their demob money to set up a bakery at 21 Crossgate, Cupar – just a mile from our current bakery.
The Cupar team, including 19 year-old apprentice baker Alexander Milne (Fisher & Donaldsons’ nephew) enjoy some well-earned social time.
A skilled craft baker and confectioner, Davie Donaldson wins numerous medals and awards during his time, including the coveted ‘Gold medal for shortbread’.
Alexander Milne takes the helm and continues to build on the business’ reputation for excellence. His expertise called upon to judge master confectionery competitions in London.
Alexander’s son Grant starts as the bakery’s message boy, delivering bread before and after school, before working his way up through the business. We still have his bike!
F&D purchase the old Armit’s bakery and shop on Church Street, St Andrews, which becomes the bakery’s flagship shop. At the time there were 10 bakeries in the town. We’re still there to this day.
Grant’s wife Audrey comes back from Belgium after trying ‘Religieuse’ pastries and asks her husband to make a coffee cream choux bun. He says it’ll never catch on, but… the rest is history!
A pilot in his spare time, Grant, alongside friend and baker Norman Stuart (Stuart’s of Buckhaven) and son Eric Milne, bake and fly 700 Scotch pies to Black Watch soldiers in Stuttgart, Germany who are desperate for a taste from home.
Our most popular and loved confection, we can’t divulge much about its inception, recipe or history, but the man to thank for this delicacy is Grant’s son Sandy, who created and perfected the recipe. Thank you Sir!
Grant hangs up his white coat to spend more time travelling, leaving the hard work to his sons Sandy & Eric who take the business from strength to strength.
After years of supplying the Royal Family at Holyrood, F&D proudly received the highest honour in retail, a Royal Warrant.
How do you celebrate 100 years in the bakery business? Setting the World Record for the largest doughnut wall seemed fitting! Over 1,000 doughnuts later, on St Andrews Day in St Andrews, siblings and the bakery’s fifth generation - Ben, Chloe and Jade – became record breakers!
The business passes from the fifth generation (brothers Sandy & Eric Milne) to the fifth, in the safe hands of siblings Chloe, Ben and Jade.
